  It may be an annoying question, but it bothers me from some time, since I found out people would spend fortunes on a CD having its obi strip! I mean, I understand it is a sign of original Japanese product, but why spending double price to get a piece of sheet (attention to the spelling! :)), when you don't even understand what's written on it?!

  Is there anything I am missing?!

  I too never managed to figure out that myself.
  In fact, back in my early days of record collecting when I didn't knew much about prices, rarity etc., I had found a mint japanese copy of Brian Ice - Talking To The Night and I simply threw the obi in the garbage can!
  I guess it's something like to have the SIAE stamp on an italian record, but I still don't find that so fascinating....

  This the main reason.

  The fascinating point is that the japanes are well known for their thorough mastering techniques.
  In the old days ('70s/'80's) the vinyl records (with Obi) mostly 'Rock' would Be sold for extreme high amounts.

  PHAEAX: Still, a Japanese release has its Japanese lyrics included and so on! So, anyone can certify it's from Japan, with or without that obi, isn't it?!

  Obi strips do also have additional info on them, such as the date of release, to the day, the price it was to be sold at in Yen from that time, as well as at what date later on it may be reduced in price (part of record label shenanigans to make more money). Japanese releases do have the advantage of bonus tracks, at least in the rock world, my experience with Italo Disco pales in comparison in all honesty. But the Obi itself is just a kinda cute bit of card with info and pretty graphics on it and technical info.

  It's just a collector thing. Having a more complete set is more valuable. A lot of obi designs are pretty neat, too.

  I get why people wouldn't be too bothered about getting releases with stickers on them, often because the artwork of the release is nice to have in it's full form. (CD generation gets around this of course with the jewel case) So I'd undertstand not wanting a release with a sticker, but a non-Japanese Obi seems an odd thing to not find at least somewhat interesting to have. Not worth an extra £10 or anything, but if I could chose between obi and not, obviously have an obi.

  My point exactly wasn't if an obi makes or not the item more valuable. It does, of course. But how come it doubles or triples the value, this is something I don't get.

  Again, as far as I can tell it's just one of those things about record collecting. It's different, normally only Japan does it, it completes a set and makes it look more authentic. Is it worth that price? Depends.

  Again, as far as I can tell it's just one of those things about record collecting.

  Or about collecting in general. People pay thousands more for certain comic books just because there is slightly less wear than cheaper copies; some old books are worth 20-50 times as much with a well preserved dust jacket; the presence/absence of the gum on back of postage stamps can affect their value even though collectors are never going to stick them on anywhere, etc. Many collectors want things as they were as close to new as possible.

  Well I know these japanese releases are superb pressed but when it comes to classic italo it cant be so many releases out for our type of music. I know Brian Ice since I have that one but are there so much other records released in Japan?

  Thomas, I cannot help you! My main interest is in CDs, I am sorry! I only collect vinyls not released on CD. Collecting vinyls is a tricky business, for not wealthy people, 'cause it generates an unfinished addiction! It's like exploring space: it never ends. CDs collecting may come to an end, on a certain style of music! :)

  Thomas, I cannot help you! My main interest is in CDs, I am sorry! I only collect vinyls not released on CD. Collecting vinyls is a tricky business, for not wealthy people, 'cause it generates an unfinished addiction! It's like exploring space: it never ends. CDs collecting may come to an end, on a certain style of music! :)

  But then of course there's all the CD re-releases with bonus tracks and such, which one may want to collect. This gets even worse when they decide to remaster with one set of bonus tracks, then remaster it again 10 years in the future with another set of bonus tracks. It'll always find a way to get out of hand.

  Those are all listings by the same seller, though. Even if he/she thinks the price should increase that much, most people don't (in my experience, anyway). Like I said, it mostly depends on the record, and since you brought it up, in some cases the seller too.

  Yeah, there's a lot of late period italo, mostly early eurobeat that was issued on vinyl through Canyon or Alfa.
